A Mecca in Hove

Al Medina Mosque has featured recently in OnRoute magazine. Located in
Bedford place, the mosque has a capacity of 1,500. The magazine says,
"Inside, the mosque is a serene space with no opulence or intricacy of
interior design to distract from prayer. There are simply rows of books
containing the teachings of Islam, bare walls and a carpeted floor on
which worshippers sit or kneel in rows pointed towards Mecca."

The article also mentions the BHMF Boys Youth Club, and its founder,
BHMF chair Sabri ben Ameur. "[the youth club] places an emphasis on
learning and playing in an Islamic environment. Sabri ben Ameur
advocates integrated education but emphasises the importance of the one
hour session, learning basic Islamic studies such as the Qur'an and
Arabic."

BHMF Secretary Interviewed in Emel

BHMF's secretary, Daoud Clarke, has been interviewed in the recent
issue of Emel, the Muslim lifestyle magazine, as part of an article about children of converts to Islam. Both his parents converted to Islam in Jerusalem, at the hand of Shaykh Muhammad al-Jamal.

He says about the British Muslim identity, "There are many things in
British culture, such as politeness, hospitality, and a sense of
equality and justice that are engrained, and that are very compatible
with Islam. It is these things that we need to bring out and emphasise
in our dealings with non-Muslis, in order to show how 'British' Islam
can be!

"I don't think I have a confused identity. I want to be part of forming
a British Muslim identity, and I think this is an exciting time for
British Muslims."
